Brad vs Firefighter

October 11, 2008.
Coffee Shop: Irvine Starbucks @ Campus & California

Sometimes it can be a bit tough getting a seat at the Irvine Starbucks, especially if you want one that has a cushion. Luckily for me, one was open. I went over and sat my computer bag on the table, then went and bought my coffee. When I returned with my coffee, a firefighter was sitting at my table, on the cushioned side. Firefighter’s buddies had taken the two tables next to mine, and instead of sitting in one of the wooden chairs at those tables, he took the cushion seat at my table.

I didn’t do the brave thing and tell him I was there first. I didn’t do the sissy thing and take my bag and leave. I did the awkward thing, and sat down at the table with him like he wasn’t there.

This started a loop of awkwardness. Firefighter was clearly feeling just as awkward, if not more. Still, like a man who has stared fire in its orange (sometimes blue) face, he remained. This awkward balance held for about 20 minutes until I noticed that he had become far too comfortable. That is when I asked him if he could move his legs so I could plug in the power for my laptop. He awkwardly obliged, but now the layer of silence was broken. Much like removing a key jenga block, he soon toppled and suggested to Buddies that it was time to leave.

As soon at they left, I promptly switched to the cushioned seat. I then looked at the guy who was sitting at the next table over during all of this. We shared a silent look that clearly conveyed what was on both of our minds. “Wtf was up with that?”
